Blog - Be Still

Living in a fast paced world and one which is characterized by uncertainty, we all too often wonder and worry about what the next decade, year, month, or even week will bring, which is the source of much tension, stress, and anxiety. In this state of madness, how often do we take a minute and "Be still, and know that I am God..." (Psa 46:10)? You may be rushing to read through this because you have so much to do, but alas you miss the point, I beseech you, "stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God." (1Sa 9:27). Turn off the idiot box wherein you hear of the wicked works of men and take a few minutes and "stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God." (Job 37:14). With a mission to save a multitude which no man could number (Joh 6:39 c/w Rev 7:9), our Lord Jesus Christ still took time to get alone with God to pray (Mat 14:23). When His disciples were so busy "coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat", Jesus said unto them, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while" (Mar 6:31). Those words are as true now as they were then. In our busy lives, the LORD could pass by with a great and strong wind, an earthquake, and a forest fire and we would likely miss it because we are so distracted. How then are we to hear God speaking to us in "a still small voice" (1Ki 19:12), and saying to us like he did to Elijah, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" (1Ki 19:13). What doest thou here?....that is a searching question, is it not? Have you ever stopped to ponder that simple question? Have you ever wondered what you are here on earth to do? This life is "a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (Jam 4:14) and the more we pack into each day, the faster it goes. Just before he was ready to die, David reminded Solomon of what is truly important in this life when he said, "keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself" (1Ki 2:3). What doest thou here? -- the answer was summed up by Solomon, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." (Ecc 12:13). Let's do our best to be "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil" (Eph 5:16). Let's pray that God will "teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (Psa 90:12). Let's do as Solomon exhorted us and "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh..."(Ecc 12:1). Let's do as God says and "Be still, and know that I am God..." (Psa 46:10)
