Five Phases of Salvation From Sin

I. There are five phases of salvation from sin which are taught in the scriptures.

II. Phase 1 - Salvation from the plan of sin.

1. God, knowing that Adam would sin and pass down a sinful nature to all of his descendants, decided before the world began to elect (choose) some of the human race to be saved from their sins.

2. Rom 5:12 - Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

3. 1Pe 1:2 - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

4. Eph 1:4-5 - According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5) Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

5. This phase took place before the world began; so obviously we have NOTHING to do with it.

III. Phase 2 - Salvation from the penalty of sin.

1. The Father gave those whom He elected to Christ for Him to die for their sins on the cross and make legal payment for their sins which deserved death.

2. Joh 10:15 - As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

3. Rom 5:8-10 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

4. 2Co 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

5. 1Pe 2:24 - Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

6. This phase took place nearly 2000 years ago; so obviously we have NOTHING to do with it.

IV. Phase 3 - Salvation from the power of sin.

1. Having had their sins legally atoned for by the death of Christ, the elect are yet born into this world with a dead spiritual nature which prohibits them from seeking God and doing any good (Rom 3:10-12). The third phase takes place at some point during the lives of each of the elect when God resurrects their dead spirit, giving them new spiritual life and making them born again. It is at this point when the elect are given eternal life.

2. Rom 3:10-12 - As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

3. Col 2:13 - And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

4. Eph 2:1 - And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

5. Joh 10:28 - And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

6. Eph 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

7. This phase took place at some point in the lives of each of the elect when we were spiritually DEAD; so obviously we have NOTHING to do with it.

V. Phase 4 - Salvation from the practice of sin.

1. Once a person has been given eternal life, they then have the ability to believe the gospel and repent of their sins and stop practicing sin. This is the only phase of salvation in which the sinner actively participates.

2. Act 2:37-38,40 - Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 40) And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

3. 2Ti 2:19 - Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

4. 1Th 4:3-4 - For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4) That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

5. 1Ti 4:16 - Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

6. This phase takes place when the elect obey the gospel. It is the only phase of salvation that is temporal in nature, and it does not effect the other phases.

VI. Phase 5 - Salvation from the presence of sin.

1. Even though the elect are made spiritually free from sin, we still have sinful bodies which will be perfected and freed from sin at the resurrection. This phase will finally save the elect from the very presence of sin.

2. 1Co 15:52-53 - In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

3. Rom 8:23 - And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

4. Phi 3:21 - Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

5. This phase takes place at the resurrection at the last day.

VII. Phases 1-3 and 5 are all accomplished by the sovereign grace of God for all of the elect and their will or works have nothing to do with it.

1. Rom 8:29 - For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

2. Rom 8:30 - Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
