For a sermon series on Hell: Hell

The indented outline is attached below.

Hell

I. Hell is a place of torment where the soul of the wicked goes immediately upon death.

1. Psa 9:17 - The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

2. Luk 16:19 - There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

3. Luk 16:20 - And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

4. Luk 16:21 - And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

5. Luk 16:22 - And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

6. Luk 16:23 - And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

7. Luk 16:24 - And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

8. Luk 16:25 - But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

9. Luk 16:26 - And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

10. Luk 16:27 - Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

11. Luk 16:28 - For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

A. The account of Lazarus and the rich man is not a parable.

B. Jesus didn't identify it as a parable like He did for many of His parables.

C. It does not use parabolic language such as "The kingdom of heaven is like unto..."

D. The account of Lazarus and the rich man is just that: an account of actual people who actually went to heaven and hell upon death.

II. Hell is a place of eternal fire.

1. Mar 9:43 - And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

2. Mar 9:44 - Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

3. Rev 14:9 - And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

4. Rev 14:10 - The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

5. Rev 14:11 - And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

III. God will destroy both soul and body in hell.

1. Mat 10:28 - And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2. The destruction of the soul happens immediately after death (Luk 16:22-23).

3. The destruction of the body happens after the body is resurrected on the last day (Joh 5:28-29 c/w Joh 11:24).

IV. The souls (and the bodies after the resurrection) of the wicked will not be annihilated, but will be tormented in hell (and later in the lake of fire) forever.

1. Jud 1:7 - Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, SUFFERING the vengeance of eternal fire.

2. Rev 20:10 - And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

3. Rev 20:15 - And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

V. Any arguments against hell made on the basis of the Hebrew and Greek words translated as "hell" by people who do not speak Hebrew and Greek fluently will be ignored.

1. Before making an argument against hell using Hebrew and Greek, take a little test that I have made for you at www.MinneapolisChurch.net/greek.

2. If can't pass the test (and 99.999% of you won't), then don't bother making an argument from languages you don't understand against what the KJV teaches about hell.
