Is Atheism a Religion?

I. Some of the key elements of religion are: belief in a higher power that is the reason for one's existence, belief in things that cannot be observed and must be accepted by faith, a story of creation, a moral law to which one must adhere, evangelism, and assembling with those of like faith for fellowship.

II. Does atheism have these attributes?

III. Belief in a higher power that is the reason for one's existence.

1. They believe that the universe is eternal and therefore is the reason for its own existence.

2. Atheists believe that the universe is the reason for their existence.

3. Therefore atheists have a god, namely, the universe.

4. Atheists deny the existence of any other gods, therefore they are monotheists.

IV. Belief in things that cannot be observed and must be accepted by faith.

1. Many atheists believe in a multiverse which has never been observed, and for which there is no evidence.

2. Atheists believe in the doctrine of evolution (biological, stellar, chemical, etc.) which has never been observed.

3. Atheists believe that life came from non-life, which has never been observed.

V. A story of creation.

1. Atheists have a childish story of creation which they accept by faith.

2. Once upon a time many billions of years ago, in a place far, far away, there was a little spec of matter that exploded, and (contrary to all observation and experience) order emerged from chaos and rocks transformed themselves into all plants, animals, and humans that we see today.

VI. A moral law to which one must adhere.

1. Atheists have a moral law that they preach to which men must adhere.

2. They say that the moral law is to do what is helpful and avoid what is harmful.

3. They say that we must respect men's decisions to live how they wish (unless of course that decision would be to refuse to bake a cake for a "gay" wedding, etc.).

VII. Evangelism.

1. Many atheists try to evangelize the lost and to convert them to their religion.

2. Some of them even write tracts with hope of convincing people to believe in their god.

3. Some of them devote much time to giving speeches promoting their beliefs.

4. Some of them go to Meetup groups to debate with Christians to try to persuade them convert to their belief system.

VIII. Assembling with those of like faith for fellowship.

1. Many atheists are members of organizations and clubs which they regularly attend to fellowship with those of like-faith.

2. Just look at how many atheist Meetup groups there are for proof of this fact.
